Artist description:
It is a work that recreates Christopher Columbus's expedition through a seascape charged with dynamism and tension. The three caravels—the Santa María, the Pinta, and the Niña—advance across a raging sea whose force symbolizes the uncertainty, fear, and emotional conflict that accompanied the voyage.
The composition is structured as a visual spiral that guides the eye from the Santa María, following the waves, ascending towards the sky, and finally returning to the Pinta. This continuous journey reinforces the idea of a voyage without guarantees.
The chromatic contrast between the cool tones of the sea and the warm tones of the sky underscores the duality that defines the work: doubt and hope, danger and faith, adversity and heroism. The sky, opening diagonally towards the Pinta, alludes to the moment when Rodrigo de Triana sighted land on October 12, 1492.
With its profoundly dynamic staging, the work captures not only the violence of the physical storm, but also the psychological dimension of the journey. And, amidst the turbulence, it hints at the serenity that heralds dawn: the calm that follows uncertainty, the promise that awaits after the risk.
